Chapter Fourteen

After the week of unexplained bad fortune and close calls, a full week slipped by with no surprises. When a second week with no relative drama rolled around, Madison decided the man with the baseball cap had either gotten over his vexation, had gone back wherever he came from, or both. At any rate, he no longer tormented the people of The Sisters, and the only surprises in Madison’s life were the routine crises that came with raising teenagers.

Amid last-minute changes in schedules, spats with girlfriends, boyfriends, and siblings, aunt duties with baby Hope, and fulfilling promises to actual paying clients, Madison squeezed in time to work on her cold case. She felt freer to move about town now, following what few leads she had on Alpha Bodine’s murder. There was still the matter of inciting Otis Perry’s wrath, so she proceeded as stealthily as possible.

When her internet search for Henry Boudreaux led to nothing but dead ends, Verna Bishop tracked down the number for the person claiming to have seen Benny years after his supposed death. Madison called at her first opportunity.

“Yeah, this is Dom Hebert. Who’s asking?” a gruff voice demanded in a heavy accent.

“This is Madison deCordova. I’m a consultant working in conjunction with The Sisters Police Department, and I’m hoping you can help locate someone who once lived here.”

“Why? They come into an inheritance or something?” he scoffed.

“Something like that.”

“What’s in it for me?”

“That depends on how gracious our recipient is feeling,” she hedged.

“Our what?”

“The person we’re looking for.”

“Who ya lookin’ for?”

“While living here, he went by the name Benny Bodine.”

“Benny Bodine died a long time ago.”

“But I was under the impression you saw him, some years later. I believe he may have been using the name Henry Boudreaux.”

“I remember Henry. Ain’t seen him in a month of Sundays, but I ‘member him well enough.”

“You haven’t seen him recently?” she asked in disappointment. “Do you happen to know where he might be by now?”

“Well, now lemme see. Lemme think about this.” After a long, roundabout explanation that involved one of his favorite barrooms, two ex-wives, and a brief stint in the county jail, the man decided he knew someone who could possibly help. Between his rambling and his thick accent, Madison had trouble following the conversation.

“You give ‘im a call and tell him Dom says you was okay. Tell him he still owes Dom a frosty one.”

“Uhm, okay. Thank you for speaking with me.”

“If you find Henry, or Benny, you ‘mind him who put you on his trail and the road to fortune.”

“I’ll do that. Thanks again.”

Her buoyant feeling lasted until she made the next phone call. The number the man gave her had been disconnected. There was no one listed in the directory with his name, and she couldn’t find him through an internet search. She resorted to asking Brash for his help locating the man, but even that was a dead end. The last known address was no longer valid, and the phone number was the same one she had.
